This image looks like there may be an alien abduction going on. In fact it is a natural phenomenon, called light pillars that has everything to do with how our eyes see light reflected off of crystals in the atmosphere.
Columns of light apparently beaming directly upwards from unshielded (and wastefully polluting) lights are sometimes visible during very cold weather.
