Report: Secret Meetings Held in Europe on Syria Chemical Weapons Issue
Major-General Aviv Kochavi, head of Israel’s military intelligence, returned last week from a round of secret meetings in several European countries according to a report in Israel daily Yediot Ahronot. The topic of conversation: Syria, and in particular concerns surrounding the movement and possible use of chemical weapons in the country. The newspaper reported that one of the central issues discussed was possible courses of action that could be taken to avoid chemical weapons falling into hostile hands, such as those of Hezbollah and other extremist organizations.
Last week the London’s Sunday Times reported that Israeli special forces were operating within Syria to track the movement of chemical and biological weapons in the war-torn country. This came in the wake of reports that Assad was preparing to use chemical and biological weapons on Syrian citizens as well as unconfirmed reports that he had even transferred some of the weapons to Hezbollah.
