Susan Collins: Cannot Support Rice
COMMENTS, scroll down.
QUICK OVERVIEW:

After a dismal performance yesterday, Susan Rice returned to the Capitol again today only to have U.S. Senator Susan Collins reaffirm that she would need more information before she could support Rice for Secretary of State.
ESSENTIAL POINTS:
  • "Collins met with Rice for one hour and 15 minutes but said she still wanted more information about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission and a nearby CIA annex in Benghazi in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed."
  • "The Maine senator, the top Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said she was concerned over Rice making what she termed 'political' comments at the height of a contested presidential campaign. And she stressed that the United States seems not to have learned lessons from the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa, when Rice was Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, which Collins said was 'echoed' in many ways by the Benghazi attacks.
MOS:
While U.S. Senator strikes a very political tone with the Susan Rice issue, her answer is very clear: Rice is not a viable candidate for Secretary of State. Collins went so far as to stay that Senator John Kerry would be better suited for this position. What makes Collin's stance on Rice strong and definitive is that she took a historical overview of Rice's failures from Rwanda, Embassy bombings in Africa to the latest in Libya. In each event, Rice has held an influential position and failed to make correct judgements. By taking this outlook, Collins seems to be asking Rice, "how can we trust you with Secretary of State when you have failed at the other tests earlier in your career?"
